KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — Monday, June, 6, 2016 marks 72 years since D-DAY in Normandy.
We visited Geraldine Suchocki, a Coast Guard Veteran, to hear more about what that day was like stateside.
Suchocki and her husband were both serving in the Coast Guard during that time. She was stationed in New York City in 1944 and says she’ll never forget what it was like hearing the news of D-Day.
“Oh it was a mad house. All the streets of New York were full. People stayed and celebrated, drinking and dancing through the night. It was joy, joy joy,” said Suchocki.
Suchocki served until 1945 through the end of the war. She and her husband went onto have 10 children, 8 of their children served in the military.
